The Shrine Mosque was dedicated on November 3, 1923. Built by members of Abou Ben Adhem Temple, the "Mosque" was designed by architects Heckenlively and Mark at a cost of over $600,000. The four story building, containing a large auditorium, stage, seating for 4,750 persons, and offices, is built of red brick with polychrome terra cotta trim.

Other interesting features of the building are the mosaic tiles  in the foyer, mahogany woodwork, and Arabic designs.  An outstanding stained glass window designed by Stanley Uthwatt, a local artisan.   Atop the Mosque are domes with Arabic inscriptions.   The Shrine Mosque has served as a cultural and entertainment center and as the scene of political, religious, musical, and sports activities.   Personalities contributing to the history of the building include President Harry S. Truman, General John J. Pershing, John Philip Sousa, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Admiral Richard Byrd, Will Rogers, Jeanette McDonald, Glen Miller, Lyndon Johnson, and many others. Recently the Mosque's lower level was renovated. Architectural style is Saracenic and is a Springfield Historical Site, Registered on October 1st, 1973.

The Shrine Mosque has been a Springfield Tradition Since 1923 and is adjacent to the beautiful  University  Plaza  Holiday  Inn, the Convention  Center  and  next  door  to  the University  Plaza  Trade  Center near downtown Springfield, Missouri. A Professional   Manager and  Assistants  are on  duty  regularly  at  the  Shrine  Mosque business office.  A two level facility, the Shrine has 24,500 sq. ft. of exhibition space. The main level auditorium features 1,951 fixed seats, can accommodate 954 portable chairs, and has a 348 seat balcony for a total of approximately 3,289 seats for concerts and special events.  The arena floor has 8,050 sq. ft. for trade merchandise and exhibition shows.  The auditorium features a 40' x 60' ft. stage.  Thousands of square feet of storage space is available in the main and lower levels. The lower level (above) has 16,400 sq. ft. of space, featuring a large dance floor, bandstand, kitchen area and storage areas.  It seats up to 1800 people for parties, meetings and banquets. This area is also an excellent space for trade, merchandise and exhibition shows. It will also accommodate parties, banquets and meetings, with catering service available. Concert performances and other special events are also held in the facility.
